BW’s Crenshaw Recognized With NFPW National Awards

Solomon Crenshaw Jr.

Solomon Crenshaw Jr., a regular writer for BirminghamWatch, recently won a third-place award and honorable mention in the National Federation of Press Women’s Communicator’s Awards for two of his BirminghamWatch pieces, along with a first-place award for a story published by the Bending the Arc Project, among other awards.

He was awarded third place in the Video for Web, Web Reporting, single news or feature story category for his BirminghamWatch slideshow, “An Ode to Steve Ammons,” which marked Ammons’ retirement from the Jefferson County Commission.

He garnered an honorable mention in the Specialty Articles, Government or Politics category for “Sylvia Swayne Bucks Customs in House District 55 Runoff Race,” also published by BirminghamWatch.

His first-place award in the Special Articles, History category was for the Bending the Arc Project story, “A Cruel Business: Alabama Author Examines America’s Domestic Slave Trade.”

He won another third-place award in the Single Photograph, News or Feature category for a shot of Art Meripol in a gallery display of his concert photography. It ran in the Over the Mountain Journal.

Also from the OTMJ, the story “Uncharacteristic Mistakes Costly in Mountain Brook’s Loss to Parker” garnered Crenshaw an honorable mention in the Specialty Articles, Sports category.

Those stories and others earlier won top honors in the Alabama Media Professionals’ 2024 Communications Contest, and Crenshaw was named the sweepstakes winner for his cumulative performance in this year’s contest.
